Summer of 84 (2018) is a captivating blend of nostalgia, mystery, and teen horror that evokes the spirit of classic 1980s thrillers while also exploring darker themes of fear and trust. Directed by François Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell, and written by Matt Leslie and Stephen J. Smith, the film is a chilling coming-of-age story set in the summer of 1984. With a group of charismatic young characters, a compelling narrative, and an ominous sense of dread, Summer of 84 succeeds in blending elements of friendship, mystery, and suspense with classic horror tropes, while paying homage to films like Stand by Me (1986) and The Goonies (1985), as well as the work of John Carpenter.
The film takes place in a quiet suburban neighborhood during the summer of 1984. The story follows Davey Armstrong (Graham Verchere), a 15-year-old boy who is spending his summer vacation hanging out with his three best friends: the sarcastic and adventurous Dale (Caleb Emery), the nerdy but resourceful Woody (Cory Grüter-Andrew), and the charming but slightly rebellious Curtis (Judah Lewis). The four friends spend their days riding bikes, playing pranks, and generally enjoying the carefree nature of adolescence. However, things take a dark turn when Davey becomes suspicious of his reclusive neighbor, Mr. Mackey (Rich Sommer), a seemingly mild-mannered man who lives alone.
