Polar is an action-packed crime thriller that follows Duncan Vizla (Mads Mikkelsen), a master assassin known as โBlack Kaiser,โ who is nearing retirement. His peaceful life is disrupted when his employer, a corrupt company, decides to terminate older employees to cash in on their pensions. As a result, Duncan becomes the target of a younger group of hitmen hired to eliminate him.
What ensues is a brutal battle for survival as Duncan takes matters into his own hands, using his lethal skills to fight back. Alongside him is Camille (Vanessa Hudgens), a neighbor who gets drawn into the chaos. The film dives deep into a world of ruthless assassins, betrayal, and violent confrontations, set against a gritty, comic-book-inspired backdrop.
The film features standout performances, particularly from Mads Mikkelsen, who plays the cold and calculating Duncan Vizla. Vanessa Hudgens shines as Camille, a woman who develops an unexpected connection with Duncan. Katheryn Winnick plays Vivian, adding intensity to the cast, while other notable appearances include Fei Ren as Hilde and Matt Lucas in a supporting role.
Polar was released on Netflix on January 25, 2019. As a direct-to-Netflix release, it did not have traditional box office earnings, but it received considerable attention due to its star power and violent action sequences. The filmโs popularity grew through streaming, where it attracted viewers looking for dark, high-energy thrillers.
